As a driving force in paediatric care, our mission is to build Australia’s fourth children’s hospice in Western Sydney, to support and assist children with a life-changing condition and their families.
We know deeply the emotional, physical, and financial burden for families can be overwhelming when caring for a child with a life limiting condition. We believe every family should have the option to choose hospice care for their child at the end of life if needed. Hospices are special places where children with a life-limiting or terminal illness live, not die.

What is Paediatric Palliative Care?
Paediatric palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life and providing high need holistic support for children with a life-limiting or terminal illness and their families.
Paediatric palliative care facilities not only relieve pain and disability, they provide an environment of peace in which families can draw strength from each other and from specially trained staff.
THE STORY BEHIND THE LEGACY
Forever loved & dearly missed
Rio James Fowler, was born on the 21 July 2016. He was admitted to the emergency department due to reoccurring gastro symptoms. Paediatric doctors later diagnosed Rio with a very rare and terminal condition called arterial vasculopathy disease. Rio’s family spent time at The Bear Cottage, children’s hospice in Manly, before he passed away on the 15 January 2018.
After their experience at Bear Cottage and from getting to know other parents of children with life limiting conditions, Ryan and Karen Fowler became intent on ensuring every family across Australia would have the option to
choose hospice care for their children at end of life if needed.From here, Rio’s Legacy was born.
In June 2024, Rio’s Legacy marked a significant milestone with the announcement of not only a partnership with the GIANTS Foundation and Mounties Care but a $3 million commitment from Mounties Care to realise the vision to build Australia’s fourth children’s hospice.
With Rio’s Legacy, the new partnership between GIANTS Foundation and Mounties Care aims to raise $30 million to build Australia’s fourth children’s hospice in Western Sydney, Mounties Care Cottage – Building Rio’s Legacy.
